The Brew Crews from Alamo Drafthouse SGF & KC and Brian Durham, head brewer at Piney River
It’s a cool and cloudy day in the Ozarks today, but it was not cool and cloudy on September 4th when some of the amazing staff from Alamo Drafthouse in Kansas City and in Springfield came to Piney River Brewing to brew–again! In fact, it was a hot day that felt more like summer than most of summer.
By 9 a.m., the crew was mashing in for the the first ever hazy IPA brewed on the Piney River Farm.
Pale malt and oats were milled and mashed.

SO MANY pounds of hops were added! Citra! Galaxy! Mosaic! A cloudy looking wort was transferred from the boil kettle to the fermentation vessel.
More. Hops. Were. Added.
Twice.
In the end, it worked. You’re Welcome America was brewed with magnificent results by the Alamo brew crew. Piney River’s first “hazy” IPA is in the books and on draft at The Backlot and in Alamo Theaters in Springfield and KC!
Why the name?
You’re Welcome America is our tribute to Zombieland: Double Tap, and because we finally, after many requests, made our first New England-style IPA. It’s all quite perfect, actually.
Zombieland is probably not a movie that you would think of when you think of the folks at Piney River, and honestly, we didn’t even know about this movie until our friends at Alamo suggested that we brew a beer to go with this cult favorite.
No, in 2009 when the first Zombieland movie hit theaters, we were spending every moment of free time in working on this brewery idea that we had. Plus, we had a four-year old, and the only movies we ever watched were Cars and WALL-E. However, before collaborating on this beer, we included our now 14-year old and watched the first Zombieland and studied up on the sequel to determine that You’re Welcome America was a perfect name. (If you watch the trailer for #2, you will see where this phrase is used, very appropriately, we think. Hint: The Oval Office, the Resolute Desk, and Woody Harrelson are all involved.)
Weather forecasts are calling for a cool and rainy weekend this weekend in Missouri, and we can’t think of better way for you to spend a couple of hours than at Alamo Drafthouse in Springfield or Kansas City checking out Zombieland: Double Tap with a glass or two of You’re Welcome America IPA in hand.
Before you tell us that you’re not an IPA fan, wait a minute! and give us a chance to change your mind because New England-style IPA is not like what you usually think of for IPA.
As a New England-style IPA, You’re Welcome America is hazy and juicy, from multiple hop additions of Galaxy, Citra and Mosaic hops. True to its style, You’re Welcome America has a soft mouth-feel, forward citrus hop flavors and aroma without hop bitterness. ABV: 6.5%
Also, Zombieland is not what you’re thinking when you think of a zombie movie. Be prepared to laugh. A lot. Sarcasm is high. Guts are less so.
And if this story and these photos aren’t enough, the aforementioned 14-year old, also our head root beer maker at Piney River, compressed our hot, hazy day into two minutes of brewing fun. The making of You’re Welcome America IPA!
