Craft Beer for Capitol Hill
We've been doing the usual around here...making beer, canning beer, cleaning kegs, doing tastings, festivals and tap takeovers, and talking to politicians. Okay, so we don't talk to politicians every day. In fact, we really try to stay away from most things political, but things have changed lately. As members of the Brewer's Association, we've been diligent about contacting our legislators regarding our brewery and brewing legislation. At the Craft Brewer's Conference in San Diego this year we had the opportunity to talk with Representative Pete DeFazio of Oregon a passionate voice for craft beer on Capitol Hill. Pete loved…

A Toast to Local, Handcrafted Ozark Beer
We went back to the scene of our very first tonight. We had a delicious dinner of Ozark BBQ and fried okra. We tipped back a pint of McKinney Eddy Amber Ale (they were out of Black Walnut Wheat). We were at Olig’s BBQ in Licking. While Olig’s is a great little barbecue joint…in an old barn, no less…Marie and Dan Lewis were the first restaurant to put Piney River beer on tap. We had mentioned the possibility of putting our beer on tap in Olig’s last summer, long before we even had draft beer available for restaurants. Some of…

Hello Arkansas! May We Introduce Craft Beer from the Ozarks?
Last year, when Piney River Brewing was still a mere nanobrewery, we were contacted by a craft beer loving salesman, James Denoyer, from Glidewell Distributing in Arkansas. James expressed his eagerness to have Piney River beer in the Ozarks. Although we knew that a lot of great outdoor activities take place in Arkansas, we really couldn’t fathom making enough beer to send to Arkansas when James first contacted us late last summer. Perhaps it’s time for a couple of personal disclaimers here….Brian has a great love for the rice fields and flooded timber of Arkansas, which are great places for…

More Craft Beer in Cans = More Good Times
You probably don’t know this: waiting for your new craft beer cans is like waiting for a baby to be born. You know the outcome, but it’s painful getting there. When Piney River Brewing put McKinney Eddy Amber Ale and Missouri Mule India Pale Ale into Piney Pints, we knew that our customers would say, “That’s great. What about X beer? When’s X beer going into a can?” As we’ve told many of you, we have to purchase a half a semi-truck load of one type of can. That’s no small investment. Plus, we’re still very much in the “figuring…

Jeff City, Columbia…Handcrafted Beer from the Ozarks is Coming!
Writing this blog post is risky because all those people that love Piney River beer, or who want to love Piney River beer in Kansas City & St. Louis are going to be aggravated that this blog post is not about them and their city. So, we’ll just cut to the chase about that—yes, we want to have our beer in KC and St. Louis, but it’s not happening yet. What is happening, probably about the last week of June, is the Missouri Mule India Pale Ale and McKinney Eddy Amber Ale are going to find their way on to…

Craft Beer Shoot at the BARn*
*There were no beers injured in the making of this blog post. There comes a time in every beer’s life where a professional must be called in. In this case, the professional was once again Brooke Hamilton of Grindstone Studio. This time, Brooke brought her camera, a whole carload of “stuff”, and her mentor and teacher and our friend, Marian McKinney. Here’s how it went down: The Star: Piney River Beer The Professional: Brooke Hamilton, Grindstone Studio The Assistant: Marian McKinney, McKinney Forge & Design Studio The Beer Runner & Other Assistant: Me (Joleen) The Beer Pourer : Brian (while…

Rocking the Craft Beer Canning Machine & Other Stuff
We have blog followers that are craft beer enthusiasts, that are in the business of craft beer, and that are friends or family members. We also have several blog followers that have craft beer business aspirations of their own. Everyone asks questions about how we manage to "do it all"--work our day jobs, have a family life, farm and run a microbrewery on the side. Today was a great example of "doing it all". Bright and early this morning, Brian rounded up our cows (the girlfriends) and their calves, most of which are almost a year old. The calves will…

Craft Beer + Guest Tap = General Craft Beer Fun at the BARn
To update you a little on the progress here at Piney River Brewing...we're brewing regularly in our 7-barrel system, especially Amber Ale and IPA for canning. It will be a while before we meet the demand for our beer in cans. We're sneaking in things like our Porter and our Wheat when we get a chance so we can provide the occasional keg of the "other" beers that we brew but don't can and so we can provide those beers on tap in the BARn each weekend. Speaking of the BARn, we began putting in the bar in the upstairs. …

The Piney River Brewer's Wife
On our end of the river, this brewer's wife is nanny, maid, cook, accountant, sensory panel, brewery hostess and the ever important keg cleaner. This brewery's wife also has an avid interest in craft beer; after all, I always said I didn't like beer until (many years ago) I tasted a Fat Tire by New Belgium and said, "Mmm...that's good." The success of Piney River Brewing Company has been in large part to the fact that Brian and I are willing to work together side-by-side to do whatever needs to be done to make our dream of owning a microbrewery…

Hops, Hoptemonium, Hopalicious, Hoppiness, Hops!
We signed a contract today. Not a huge contract, but a contract nonetheless. It is a contract that is vital to the success of Piney River Brewing Company in 2012. It's a contract that's vital to the outcome of handcrafted beer from Bucyrus, MO. We signed a contract for our hops. Small, family owned brewery in the Ozarks has signed a contract with a US hop brokerage firm in Washington. Why is it important to contract your hops, you might ask? There are many different types of hops (grown around the world), and the hop farmers contract with breweries prior…
